Yes Ben, the Caledonian Canal is fantastic, we have done it twice with Markie, just time trips to avoid the midges, ie before June and September onwards. We have wimped out of the Broads this year, are away for the Mayday bank holiday and taking Markie to the IWA Trailboat Festival for the late May holiday http://www.mon-brec-canal-trust.org.uk/page3.html and then (at the moment) the Milford Haven festival http://www.seafairhaven.org.uk/ where there could be at least 3 WBs. Otherwise as you will see in the TSA cruise list, there is Windermere in October, a little closer for you.
Regarding the Caledonian Canal, remember boats launching into the canal or lochs will require a boat safety certificate whereas if you arrive by sea you do not, although the vessel must be safe, whatever that means.
