Hi Dave
I'd love to have a look at Markie. I'll be sailing on Windermere 13\14/15th June.
I'm being a bit cheeky because I'm not really a prospective customer at this stage - I think I'd like to get a Winkle Brig in a couple of years time - but I'd really like to have a look at a Winkle in the flesh if you don't mind.
Feel free to say no if that's too cheeky!

Hi, Advance Notice - WB 15 'Markie' will be up for sale on 17th June 2024. This is following a week when Markie will be day sailing from Windermere Marina 11-15 June, so an opportunity for you to sample her weather permitting.   Brief spec: 1 owner from new (June 1987), original sails including topsail, roller reefing, running forestay, Barton T track on transom rail, upgraded bowsprit, boom tent, all over towing cover, winter cover, 4hp Mercury 2 stroke, interior upholstery showing its age. Trailer upgraded with 1300kg suspension units and 13" wheels and tyres and breakback conversion. Gerold's description of the materials used on his W/B typify the variety used, which seemed to vary throughout the period of manufacture, possibly representing what was readily available at the time.
W/B 107 came with Douglas Fir mast, boom, yard, topmast and bowsprit, Iroko bulwarks, tiller, companionway boards and aft cockpit lids with ply tops.
Plywood drop boards with weighted steel shoes and a plywood rudder.
I have changed to a hollow Douglas Fir mast, aluminium topmast and spruce yard.
New plywood drop boards have been fitted with stainless steel shoes and encapsulated lead inserts, increasing their weight from approx. 11 to 26 kg each. (I understand early models had steel encapsulated drop boards. weighing around 27 kg each.)
A replacement plywood rudder has been fitted with a small stainless steel drop plate and the cockpit side benches which were covered with teak faced ply, replaced with Tek-Dek, simulated teak.

my WB 120 at that time had softwood (maybe Spruce) as end pieces on aluminum spars and mast, marine plywood behind GRP as bulwark and waterproof glued plywood on rudders and centerboards.

I built the bulwark, gaff and boom from oak during the refit, the mast from Canadian Spruce and the centerboards from marine grade aluminum.
I sanded the wooden rudder blade and sealed it with several cages of epoxy resin. I covered the benches in the cockpit with oak.

Well then Kev,

You have an unrivalled choice of two Winkle Brigs of quite differing specifications.

WB 62, Pat Arnold's boat was well developed by Martin Cartwright, is very well equipped, offers different sailing options and has an upgraded, first class roller-coater trailer.

WB 7, Rick Ladds' is an early boat, unmodified and requiring some work, offered at an attractive price.

Winkle Brigs are very robustly constructed of good design, so age or cosmetic condition should not over influence your choice. All wear parts are easily refurbished, repaired or replaced.

David Cawston's WB 15, owned from new has been well used throughout and Gerard Brown's WB 18, is a prime example of an early boat well restored.

Take the plunge, I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Hi - in case you're still looking, I have an old WB which needs some work, hence very cheap! Comes with a trailer and is almost original in every way.
