Miscellaneous / Sea Jade for sale
March 05, 2025, 08:03:57 AM
https://www.clarkeandcarter.co.uk/1984-winkle-brig/

We've owned her for five years, and she has taken us on many memorable trips to Cornwall, the West Coast of Scotland and the East Coast of England.

We've bought a bigger boat (a Cape Cutter 19) and need space.

We've improved her considerably over that time, and she's offered in a sailaway condition.
She will sleep four in what could be called basic camping-style accommodation, but for two adults, there is plenty of room for a weekend of sailing.
Twin lee boards, which are housed beneath the bunks, give a large cabin.

These lee boards were removed, and their pins were replaced in April 2022 by Harry King in Chelmondiston.
A new outboard motor mount made from Iroko was also fitted.

The mainsail with two sets of reefing points was replaced in 2021.
The nearly new genoa was converted to a carbon fibre furling Aeroluff Spar system in 2021.
The spars were sanded back to bare wood and coated with Le Tonkinois in 2021.
The bulwarks were also sanded back and treated with Le Tonkinois, whilst the rubbing strakes were coated in Deks Olje D1.
Much of the running rigging and some blocks and cleats have been replaced since.

Her hull was blasted and copper coated in 2021 and her topsides were painted with Epifanes 2 part epoxy.
A new iroko tabernacle was also fitted.

A 20w solar panel, two USB sockets and a 38 amp hour Victron AGM battery make up the electrical system.

There is a 5kg Lewmar anchor with approximately 30m of rode and chain.

There is a manual bilge pump in starboard side lazarette.

Two 'Ram Mount' instrument mounting points are fitted to the bulkhead.

In 2020, we bought a custom-made Extreme Marine braked trailer with a lighting board, a flushing kit, and an unused spare wheel. This trailer has been serviced annually.

The inventory includes a sail and boom cover, mesh halyard bags, various fenders and mooring warps, the original mainsail, and a barely used topsail with yard arm.

We love ours. Sea Jade no.18
As above, loads of space and really easy to handle. Take a look at the video section of the WB website, there is some enlightening material there.

We had Sea Jade Copper coated two years ago. So far it's been great. Yes, all existing materials / covering have to be removed but we took this opportunity to fill in any scratches etc.
There seem to be plenty of yards who'll do this sort of thing on the coast, we went to Southampton, but no one inland was willing to take it on.
I think it's a tough, dirty job but if you're set up for it with a blasting bay etc - then a boat as small as a WB doesn't pose to much of a problem.

We've got a Plastimo reffing / furling spar which we don't need anymore.
It's in Milton Keynes if anyone wants it or, maybe we could rendezvous somewhere mutually convenient.

It's a Plastimo 406 S complete with luff wire and top spacer.

Thanks.

We?re slowly coming round to giving it a go mounted in the well.

Glad you like the video, the Epropulsion is great in terms of power - and we have two batteries - but we want some more range ??
We know what you mean about smelly / dirty lumps in the van.

Thanks David

We?ve got the Epropulsion electric motor which we love but, after two weeks on the West Coast of Scotland we?re thinking of buying a petrol motor as well - to give us the extra range which is built into a can of fuel.
Past experience with engines though hasn?t been good and we?re not keen on travelling with it in the car or want to,lie it down in the cockpit.
We always seemed to be wiping up drips and spills!

The Engine / Trailing with a motor on the transom.

Does anyone trail their WB with an outboard mounted on the transom?
Is the boat strong enough to support 25kg whilst on the road?

Our motor is the 1kw Evo Plus. It?s very torquey and will push us along at 4.5 knots for 75 mins but at 1/3 power we?ve had more than 9nm from one battery across Falmouth Bay. With planning and care the range from two batteries is sufficient. Our petrol outboards were quite idiosyncratic to say the least. We know the electric motor will start first time every time.

The Hull / Re: Lee board refurbishment

The plywood base for the V berth was unscrewed which gave just about enough room to get a multitool / angle grinder type thing in to remove the shoulders of the pin supports. Then the pins were just tapped out.

We've had a 6hp tohatsu in the outboard well and it fitted with around 5mm to spare.
I think ours was the standard shaft but, the height of your transom is the key thing. We lowered ours and from what I've seen, not all of them are set at the same height anymore.
The Tohatsu was perfect in many ways but we swapped it for an Epropulsion which is also a great solution.
We've got some video of it on Youtube.

The Hull / Lee board refurbishment
January 28, 2022, 10:37:43 AM
Amongst some other tidying up and improvements scheduled for this winter, we?re having our lee boards serviced by Jackson Composites in Leicestershire.

These are some pictures and a description of the process.

Pete extracted the pins without cutting into the moulding by going in through the V berth and then grinding away the shoulders of the lee board casing which held the pin itself

The pins were very corroded at the point where they were glassed into the hull, but not where the met the lee board itself. Maybe this was a reaction to three decades of a resin / saltwater mix.
New stainless steel pins will be fitted and should give another thirty years of service.

The hole in the lee board though was huge in relation to the pin and it will need a lot of rebuilding and reinforcing before the board is refitted. It was not however an elongated hole which you might have expected after the decades of wear and use.

Thanks Dave.

That?s really kind of you.

Where do you get this information from?

WB facts seem hard to come by.

Best wishes

Gerard.

Just wondered you had any info' regarding WB18, Sea Jade. We were told she was built in either 1983 or 1993, what do you think?

Here's hoping.

Yes, we saw both WB's on their moorings. Very impressed with the standard of finish.

Glad you enjoy our videos and yes, I'll do some digging around the dates.
