Hello everyone.

I'm sad to say I am no longer owner of Mudlark. We had a lovely time and some great wee adventures sailing her and also enjoyed meeting other winkle brig sailors!

However, I'm very pleased to say that she has been bought by Pam Freeman who we send our very best wishes too and hope that she enjoys Mudlark as much as we have.

Fair winds to you all.

Ben.

Hello!

After looking out for a winkle brig for more than a year now - and missing a couple to other buyers - it looks like we are just about to take ownership of one of the 122. If the money moves as it should, we plan to be trailering her from the lakes to Norfolk next week.

First time we've trailered anything so looking forward to the adventure. After that will come the challenge of figuring out the rigging of our first gaffer.

Anyway, we wanted to introduce ourselves and to say thanks (especially to Julian) for all the great information on this forum. I suspect we will be asking the odd question ourselves soon enough.

Pensive Moment:

The thought of rowing/sculling/getting out to push a 'Brig occurs to me and shd the need arise, rowing doesn't greatly appeal so - having rummaged through the Forum looking at your various photos, I was thinking about sculling.

Have any of you who scull chosen your 'sweet spot' for placing the oar into - or even using a rowlock? I don't like the idea of the Yuloh - it'd be far too long for me to cope with. I'd be interested to know what you prefer to do.

I hope you don't mind my asking.
Optimistically for a reply, thank you. Pam

For anyone like me who goes sailing to escape all forms of microchip technology, I have stumbled across a useful rule of thumb for calculating a Winklebrig's speed. Chuck a partly filled bottle (or anything else) on a string over the bow and if it takes 3 seconds to appear at the stern you are doing just over 3 knotts.
Use at your own risk!

Hi,
I'm all very new to this so please be patient! Does anyone know if WinkleBrig Liza Shaw (WB92) found her way to Italy?! I only ask as, looking on the Owners Register it states she was sold in Feb 2011 - but in my desperate endeavours to find one to purchase, there's one over in Italy that looks remarkably like her?! I'm probably just sounding nosey - but it all seems a bit of a mystery to me. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Pam

It was a bit too blowy on Ullswater for me this weekend, so Dads sat under the cockpit tent drinking tea and talking nonsense, while below, four smallish boys kept themselves occupied with a full four way raging Warhammer battle!

I hope you have all been enjoying a happy and restive festive season, and are making plans for the coming season. It has been quiet for a while, and I know I am a major culprit, but have resolved to find a pontoon mooring for Peggoty for this year, either on Derwent or Ullswater I suspect, with the aim of spending more time on the water. I'm also considering building a little addition to the family, to accompany Peg and Fangle (the pedal catamaran!) This would be an outrigger sailing canoe, along the lines of Solway Dory's 'Osprey.' I would simplify the hulls and outriggers, along the lines of ,Hannu's boatyard' ply and taped seam construction, and endeavour not to infringe Solway Dory's copyright. As available time is always a problem for me, I would probably buy the complete rigs, rudder and lee board from Solway Dory. I like the idea of an almost uncapsizeable, portable, beachable camping boat that can hit 12knots or thereabouts. It would be lovely to hear how other Winklebriggers are dreaming about the forthcoming year - Happy New Year to you all!

I notice in the gallery section, that most owners dont fly an ensign..and no one flys a long masthead pennant as shown in one of the drawings, which looks quite jaunty! Construction of my house pennant is already underway.

Please be aware that there are two Winkle Brigs for sale and contact information is shown on the "HOME" page of this site. If you regularly visit this forum then you have probably bookmarked the"FORUM" page and would therefore skip the home page.

Andy Dalby who I think used to own Mudlark has given me two packets of the grey plastic caps which cover the nuts inside the cabin of the Brig. They are in two sizes. I was missing three which have now replaced but if any other owners are in need please let me know and I will post them to you. My email is "winkle.brig(@)virgin.net. Omit the brackets.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to moor/anchor so that the chain, rope or mooring buoy doesn't grind along the bobstay?
On a pleasant note it was great fun meeting Colin and Jane Firth with Jenyatan at the scottish traditional boat festival. We enjoyed largely sunny weather and a fresh breeze in which Mudlark managed a steady 5.5 knots with the wind on her quarter. Although on the return trip to Lossiemouth we had to admit defeat and turn into Findochty as Mudlark was making little progress beating into the wind and waves under a double reefed main and a scrap of jib. It was a perfect reason to add a day to the trip!

Hi everyone. I hope your all enjoying your winklebrigs. I'm giving Mudlark a mid season tidy before the scottish traditional boat festival this weekend. The down side of this is that I notice all the wee scrapes, scratches and stains on the topsides and deck. Anyone got any pointers or trade secrets for keeping the hull clean or returning a tired hull to its former glory? I'm currently using soapy water, high strength stain remover and 'gel coat restorer and wax', with average results.

I'm going to ask an irrelevant question in pure sailing terms, but one I'm interested in. What do people do about storage? I'm aware of the room under the seats, and I'm already adept at stuffing things down the commodious quarter berths. But I am thinking of whether I can make better use of the wooden strakes(?), not so much in terms of wooden fittings, but maybe canvas/stiff cloth with pockets that can be attached to them, thus keeping stuff readily available, but not taking much room. Books, crockery, mobile phones, half bottles of rum, handheld VHF etc. The model I have in mind is the kind of thing one sometimes sees draped behind the front seats of a car, full of stuff to keep the kids quiet. That sort of thing.
I realise I have now exhausted my newbie's dispensation to ask naff questions, but I'm sleeping onboard at least once a week, and the mind tends to wander ... :-)

Thanks

This forum has gone very, very quiet. Where are you all? Has everyone stopped sailing, repairing, painting, fiddling with their Winkle Brigs?
