I had a quick look around the web and ebay - and it seems to be almost cheaper to buy a new engine! Ridiculous. If anyone finds a good source of engine spares - let us all know!

Not seen one before - but my WB is an early one. Is it from a more recent boat? Anyone know?

You could try contacting WB92 or WB94! Other than that, afraid I've no idea! But when you do, please let me know and I'll include it in the register so others can estimate their boat's age.

Congratulations Tim, and welcome to the site - hopefully a good sailing season coming up!

Can you please let me have the details (which boat number, name, location etc) so I can keep the register up to date? Thanks. (Either here or via the Contact Us on the main site).

If they are teak, then I wouldn't try to paint them! usually the best way is just to rub down the wood until it is clean, then either just leave it to naturally oil itself, or perhaps rub in something like Deks Olje, just to show the natural beauty of the wood. Then it will look after itself for years to come and still look good.

Trailers, towing & launching / Re: Breakback Trailer
April 30, 2014, 07:46:44 AM
Hi Jim - If you use a rope as described then I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work. Indeed, if the slip was long enough you could just float off instead of winching off - really I view it as just using a rope instead of the brakes. Perhaps you could use a separate launching trailer and keep your present trailer as a road trailer?

Let us know how well it works. Best of luck.

Hi Clint - when you get the chance, can you let me know which WB you've got, and what name you're going to use so that I can update the register?

Thanks

Hi Clint, and welcome to both the forum and the world of Winkle Brigs.

Questions are always welcome, and there is no such thing as a daft or a nuisance question! However, if you haven't already, have a scan through the forum topics, they are pretty comprehensive.

As to renaming a boat - it depends entirely on your belief in superstitions! Which boat is it? Are you planning on keeping it at home and trailing every time for a sail, or keeping it "on site"?

Oh dear, I've just broken another superstition by calling her "it".

So please be careful with black cats, never go to sea if you see a nun, don't whistle, plus another 99 reasons why someone didn't catch fish a 100 years ago!

All the best

Miscellaneous / Re: Solent Area - Launch Sites?
April 20, 2014, 07:12:58 PM
Many thanks Simon, I'll have a tour around to have a look - but it's going to take some time to get Minim (WB7) up to scratch for launching.
Best of luck with WB112 - hope to see you on the Solent/Poole etc

Hi - I've recently moved house to nearish Southampton and I'm looking for a good launch site, ideally with a yard nearby. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Forum Information / Adding Photos
April 10, 2014, 04:25:40 PM
To add an attachment (photo or document etc), click on the "Attachments and other options at the bottom of the message input form, then click on the "Browse" button and select the file you want to attach. For more than 1 attachment, click on the "(more attachments)". You can add up to 4 attachments, but none of them must be larger than 250KB.

To shrink a larger file, you'll need a suitable program - sometimes one comes with email programs (try emailing the picture to yourself and see if it shrinks it), otherwise you'll need a photo handling program. Some of the programs that come with digital cameras can do it, but if not, then try using paint.net - it's a free download and works very well. The best download site is http://www.getpaint.net/index.html - any others are usually a con to get you to pay for the free program!

To use paint.net, click on "image", then "resize" and set the width to something like 320 pixels. Save the file and then browse it as above.

And the best of luck! (No actually it works very well!)

The Hull / Boom Gallows

Are these part of the hull or the rig? Whatever. My WB doesn't have the sliding, permanantly present gallows that later ones have. I have used scissor legs but hate them because they are either hidden, fall out or just get in the way. I've tried various things, but the gallows on Jowettwo (WB75) inspired me to another go. I have just fitted a fixed gallows in the stern, which will require moving the mainsheet fixing inboard a bit. All seems to work on dry land, but the test will be at sea next month.
