The Rig / Reinforcement of the mast base
April 22, 2022, 08:10:09 AM
When setting up the mast, there was always chipping at the edges at the base of the mast due to slight canting. This problem has now been eliminated by two bronze plates attached to the sides.

The Hull / Preparations
March 18, 2022, 07:43:24 AM
Good Morning,

Just a quick reminder to all of you who are still hibernating: Spring of the 2022 season is approaching!

VROUW KIRSTEN has received a new underwater paint, bulwark, mast and boom are in work and for the sliding bulkhead new skids are used.

In June we will go again for 8 days on the Ijsselmeer, in August a meeting of historic ships with regatta is on the schedule with the Wattensail in Carolinensiel.

The Rig / New mast and gaff
August 04, 2020, 12:46:36 PM
Hello,

These are the last conversions on my WB 120. The long awaited conversion from mast and gaff to wood has been successfully completed. For the VHF antenna we have found a smart solution. I think it has become beautiful. And both are lighter than the previous aluminium solutions.

Sailing / The WB 120 on the Ijsselmeer
August 04, 2020, 09:41:38 AM
From 11.08.-15.08.2020 we are back on the Ijsselmeer and the canals between Lemmer, Heeg, Makkum and Stavoren. Maybe other WB's will be there during this time and you can meet.
Callsign UKW DH6377 or a short info here in the forum!

It is not my one and I am not related to this. Only for information.

Repair Yards / Boatyard Schlick - Lembruch/Germany
April 29, 2020, 04:36:42 PM
Hello, Winkle-Brigger,

I know that most of the boats are in Great Britain but as a hint for the boats based in Holland and Germany here is the link to my favourite boat builder. Jens Schlick is a qualified boat builder and has a special knack for the needs of sailing boats, made of wood or GRP. He works very precisely and attaches great importance to a perfect end result.

https://www.segelschule-schlick.de

Jens did the following work on my WB 120:

- Making a new oak bulwark.
- Manufacture of oak seat coverings
- Making a new tree from oak
- Manufacturing of mast and gaff from Spruce
- Making a new tiller from oak

In autumn 2020 we will jointly sand down the entire underwater hull at his small shipyard and build a completely new paint structure.

In addition to boat building, the Schlick family offers moorings for boats on the Dümmer, (including crane facilities), sailing boat rentals, very nice holiday apartments and gastronomy.

The Hull / Preparation for new season
February 24, 2018, 05:57:03 PM
Hello Winkle Friends,

the new season comes closer, at the first of April VROUW KIRSTEN will be back in her element. Not many time left to do all the things she requires: renewing varnish on bulwark and baseboard, cleaning the hull and renewing anti-fouling after two years, the top-light have to be replaced because of leakage which was caused by a little  crack in the body and some more little jobs.

Nothing big, but it needs time and have to be done until beginning of March. In March a professional boatbilder will coat the seats in the cockpit with oak  :)

Photos will follow.

Remember - Preparation for the new season - it is not far off!

The Rig / Second foresail
May 12, 2017, 08:26:17 AM
Just had a discussion regarding style, dimension and benefits of one or two foresails at the Winklebrig. I found several pictures of WB´s with two foresails. Does anyone have experiences with this and may write them down here?

Thanks a lot

Sailing / Wind strength and comfort
April 22, 2017, 07:22:37 PM
Hello you,

the new saison has started, unfortunatly each weekend with strong wind up to 5 Beaufort, guts up to 7 Beaufort. To be honest, not my preferred wind force.

Today I ´ve been again at my boat bridge and looked sceptical to lots of sea spray over the waves, again 4 to 5 Beaufort and strong guts.

My question to the one´s with more experience: Am I correct if I think the range of 2 to max. 4 Beaufort is the most comfortable and definitly reasonable range of wind for a Winklebrig single handed and fitted with standard sails (hight peak gaff and foresail).

May be I am a little worried but it is my second season and I am still leraning.

Thanks a lot for your points of view!

The Hull / New bilge boards
February 14, 2017, 01:45:07 PM
Hello,
after several problems last year i have made an inspection of the bilge boards. Both made of epoxy coated marine ply with iron legs. I found the coating was fractured so water could break into the ply.  :o
I decided to renew both boards using a water resistant alumina. Because of the higher specific weight I have to optimize the shape on my milling machine.
Please find enclosed, if interested, the technical drawing for the raw shape of the biilge board. Photos of the new boards will be posted later.

Kind regards

The Hull / Rigging
September 27, 2016, 08:31:39 AM
Hello,

although sailing the WB is my favorite, the work  at the boat goes on. Actual the boom is in my focus. I am not really satisfied with the wooden yoke at the boom ( I have had some problems to reef the mainsail during an unexpected increasing wind) , additional the boom is a little too short to tense the foot of sail correct. As I started with the bulwark oak of local trees is my preferred material for all wooden parts at the boat. So I decided to combine a new oak-made boom with a bronze fitting to the mast. The structure is finished and I add some photos of the ongoing job.

Kind regards

The Hull / Interior construction
August 01, 2016, 11:22:50 AM
Hello!

Although I use nearly every weekend for sailing and learning I am looking forward to autumn and winter. Two projects are in process of planning:

- installation of a chain locker with drainage unter the bow-deck
- built-in cupboard in the bow of my WB

Does anyone have experience with similar ideas?

Kind regards

The Hull / CE Certification of Winkle Brig
August 02, 2015, 09:51:58 AM
Good morning!

Does anyone of the owners of a Winkle Brig have a CE certification for his boat? In Germany a registration of the boat is required if  I want to travel on inland waterways. But, actual, without a CE certification I cannot apply for a registration number.

Thanks a lot for your informations!

The Hull / Refit of my WB 120
July 28, 2015, 06:36:03 PM
Hello,

I have started to refit the WB 120. After a detailed evaluation of structural condition I had to ascertain a lot of more optic defects, but also some serious ones.

The tabernacle is too small for the housing and maladaptive. Overcoming  and sharp edges on the top and the front generates risk of injury. I will built a new one made of stainless steel.

Because of rotten plywood I  dismantled the bulwark. Behind the bulwark I found significant osmose beside the cabin outer walls.

Bullseyes are installed careless with lots of silicone and halved flange plates.

Lots of holes have been made for fitting installations and afterwards have been filled with acrylic polymer.

Between the centre-boards the hull had contact to a stone or something else, varnish and GRP shows typical damages.

The first step now was to  dismantle all parts from the hull and start to renew  surface and varnish of the hull. That means to sand, fill in, sand, prime, sand, coat and polish... a lot of entertaining!

I will comment on.

Miscellaneous / New WB owner
July 26, 2015, 07:50:28 PM
Just want to say hello and introduce me as a new WB owner

Hello, my name is Gerold Bueschen from Wersen, Germany. A couple of weeks ago I have bought WB 120 "TWINKEL", ex PENNYBELL and ex GIGI, from Theo te Winkel, Netherlands.

Regarding to my families tradition ( my ancestors were seaman on their own sailing ships from the early 19th century until the late 1928) the WB 120 will be renamed to VROUW KIRSTEN as a complimet to my companioness.

Actual the Winkle Brig is in my workshop to become completely refitted. Some former building operations have to be reworked or improved.

I am very impressed of this great forum with all these experiences and suggestions for my work with this beautiful ship.

Looking forward to an exciting time with the Winkle Brig.

Gerold
