Hello Gerold.

Your thread is very interesting, especially the work to the hull. Keep the updates coming.

Trailers, towing & launching / Re: Winklebrig weight

Hello Dave and David.

Thanks for your replies. They were very helpful.

I think that 1500kg rated units are the way to go.

Apologies for the delay in replying to both of you. Sorting the trailer and refurbishing "Ratty" had been planned for this winter. However, over the last month a serious health issue in the immediate family has raised it's ugly head and has now put that time scale very much in doubt. Not to worry. I will visit the forum as the situation allows and thanks again for the replies.

Trailers, towing & launching / Winklebrig weight
November 25, 2014, 02:24:18 PM

We need to make a decision regarding our current non braked trailer. It's clearly not quite suitable, or legal.

The choices are to buy a new or used compatible trailer, or to change the current trailer to braked spec.

Have any members here weighed their Winklebrigs?

We would prefer to tow "Ratty" without removing the outboard and loading the car up too much.

Thanks.
Andy.

The Rig / Re: Tabernacle

Hello Clint.

It was already fitted to the WC when we bought it. I'm aware that the previous owner spent quite a bit on various stainless fittings.

Regarding the curvature on the base, the base on this one was shaped by way of a large press. Another way to do it would be to use a thicker stainless base plate and then shape the underside with an angle grinder. It may take some time and I would use the flap discs (40 grade).

I would be tempted to shape another base plate in this fashion and then get a fabricator to run some TIG welds around this placing it underneath your new tabernacle.

I appreciate that this topic is a little old, but we have a recently manufactured stainless steel tabernacle fitted to our West Coast 16 "Ratty".

This was already fitted to the WC when we bought it. I have attached a picture should it be of interest.

The West Coast has a single centre board. In a couple of months we will be lifting the stern off the trailer and I will try and show a picture with the centre board lowered. We want to check the pivot pin and it's seating.

Out of interest do you have a picture showing the arrangement of a WB?

It was the Swallows and Amazons appearance that appealed to us.

I've attached a couple of pics taken whilst I was jet washing off the loose, copper coated hull.

And yes, I will be modifying the trailer.

Miscellaneous / West Coast 16

Hi.

We have recently bought a West Coast 16, number 5 of 6, "Ratty", built in 1983.

I understand that following the building of these 6, the hull moulds were then used to build the Winkle Brigs.

I would be interested to contact the owners of the other 5 (hopefully the are all still around).

Although the "Ratty" is in reasonable condition we are starting a winter refurb consisting of a repaint and all of the woodwork being tidied up (and no doubt lots of other jobs!).

We believe that "Ratty" has spent all of it's life in the Poole area with it's two previous owners. We are in Devon and will be trailering it around.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy and Helen Wiltshire.
