Miscellaneous / Winklebrig 106 'Cockle' for sale
September 25, 2021, 03:59:42 AM
Unfortunately, due to ill health,we must sell our lovely Winklebrig 106 'Cockle'.Pictures of her may be found on the WB site plus a google search will offer pictures and videos. She is in good condition with recently refurbished and epoxied bilge boards,6hp Mariner outboard,a good road trailer.'Cockle' is a late Mk 2 version with the higher coachroof and has the high peaked gaff rig with tan sails. She sails well and we have fitted various period brass/bronze fittings such as navigation lights, chain hawse pipe, porthole in top bargeboard etc.She was lifted ashore yesterday and is in AA Coombs boatyard in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight at an attractive price of ?6,500.We may be contacted by phone-01983-875823 or e-mail: robin.stringfellow@btinternet.com

The Rig / Re: Rig Tension
June 24, 2021, 06:08:03 AM
Hi Gerold-your new aluminium bilge plates look fantastic and I would be very interested to hear how they perform under sail. The reason I have added an inner forestay plus 2nd pair of shrouds is that all of my sailing is on the sea in fairly open water and mainly on my own, so do not like the idea of the mast coming down on my head! As to rig design-do like the look of 'Titsou' sailing at Rochelle with battened mainsail and two foresails.Happy sailing, regards,Robin.

Just to say thankyou from a newbie member to the crew of 'Sea Jade' for two new delightful videos taken on Coniston water.Videos of Winklebrigs sailing are fairly few in number and am planning on producing one of my own boat entitled 'all at sea!' regards,Robin.

The Rig / Re: Rig Tension
May 22, 2021, 04:38:35 AM
Hi Gubby-seems we are going through a similar head scratching over the rig.My boat,no 106,is a high peak gaff(not gunter,as some describe)but raises the same questions.Vrouw is right in that it is only the forestay that requires some tension as the gaff mainsail rig itself due to its weight and when filled with wind creates its own tensions, hopefully in the right places. What I am doing is adding an extra pair of shrouds plus an inner forestay using dyneema-belt and braces for the same sailing area as yourself. This in itself raises the question of a mast support which I am working on by adding a forward bulkhead, with a door,so that 'Cockle' will have a chain locker. This will put some weight lower down in the bows to help with stability and waves. One or two other owners(Martin Cartwright)have also added extra ballast under the cabin floor which I intend to do myself but am a bit eager to get afloat and go sailing, perhaps to Ashlett creek which I used to visit regularly(very welcoming sailing club there-money in the honesty box) and since the pub changed hands a nice lunch to be had.Best regards,Robin.

Hi again Jos-congratulations from another newish owner-been beavering away with 'Cockle'.There has been a lot to do-2nd shrouds, inner forestay, renew most of the halyards, mast support, create chain locker, update electrics etc plus beating a well worn path to Classic marine for brass nav lights, brass cleats, brass hawse pipe etc.I have been following and imitating the improvements made by David Bone, owner of No 107 'Hope'.I am sure you will have a lot of fun refitting your boat, best wishes,Robin.

Hi all-possible correction-think the Winklebrig I saw in Poole harbour was 'Pelican'-green hulled, not as I mentioned 'Puffin'.

Hello again Jos-congratulations on your purchase-are you anywhere near the fellow whose life is sweet in a gaffer of sixteen feet.Round here(Isle of Wight)they say-nothing naffer than a plastic gaffer.Mind you,on the smart racing/cruising timber yachts there are three filler caps reading-Diesel-Water-Cash.Hoping your Winklebrig gives you much pleasure-regards,Robin.

Hi John-thanks and have admired your boat 'Cressy' via the owners listing. What lovely boats these are and the first one I saw was in Poole harbour quite a few years ago(maybe 'Puffin').Happy sailing days to come, regards,Robin.

Miscellaneous / Winklebrig 106 'Cockle'

Hi all-I write to introduce myself as the new owner of the above.I purchased 'Cockle', last October via Alex at Anglia brokerage and she was trailed down from Suffolk to Portsmouth-then onto the ferry to the Isle of Wight where she now lives.'Cockle' is being prepared for the Solent and I have learned an awful lot from the forums. The Winklebrig book was purchased and have read some of Pauline Rowson's books though not too happy about 'Nutmeg' being set on fire! Really looking forward to sailing her and she should be going on her mooring in Bembridge harbour in about four weeks time.
