Title: Hand Brake Replacement
Post by: Clint on May 29, 2014, 11:41:43 PM
Hi all. I need to replace the trailer hand brake, but have no idea what I am looking at, I have had a look on the net, and have seen dozens of different styles and types of hand brake. Can someone please tell me the correct one for my trailer. The hand brake does not engage at all, it gets tight but does not hold on the ratchet. (Is it the Bradley 3331 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRADLEY-KIT-3331-REPLACEMENT-HANDBRAKE-/121183770190) I am eventually going to have to have all the brakes services anyway, as I think only one of the left hand side is actually working, but that's for another day.

Hi Clint - I see you have the normal trailer brake problems! Unfortunately salt water and trailers really don't go together too well, and probably the weakest point is the brakes.

Usually if the handbrake ratchet doesn't work it's because the push-button rod going down inside the handle has rusted in and stuck in the release position. If you're lucky you can free it off by plentiful oil, working it up and down, wire brushing and patience. Alternatively, replace it! The eBay link looks ok to me, but £70-odd quid!

Also with trailer brakes, it's usually wise to start at the wheels and work your way forward rather than the other way round, otherwise you end up having to re-adjust everything afterwards.

Best of luck, Rick.

Thanks Rick, the push button release on the handle works, it's the little lever that engages the ratchet bit that doesn't work, it seems that it's not going far enough into the grooves, so it doesn't hold anything. £70.00 did give me a slight heart murmur as well.

Hi Clint,

I'd be tempted to give it some gentle persuasion with a large hammer, the pawl should engage fully in the teeth - I'd still suspect a bit of corrosion - if the brake is fully "off" then the pawl is held up a bit, and it may have set in this position. Certainly worth trying before shelling out!

Hi Clint,

In addition to all the good advice already profferred, I just wanted to add that it's a good idea to avoid using the handbrake while the trailer is parked for long periods as everything has a tendency to seize up in the on position.  Much better to use wheel chocks and save the brakes for manoeuvring and  towing.  Are you anywhere near Somerset, I'd be glad to assist and get acquainted.

Hi Paul, thanks for the offer, but l'm in Surrey, I'd much rather be on the coast of Somerset, Devon or Cornwall. I think l am going to bite the bullet and buy a new hand brake, as the one l have at the moment is buggered beyond repair.
