Repair Yards / Re: Gunwales

Hi GB, do you mean the bulwarks, if so the top oval section is very securely glued in place, apart from the joint by the porthole where it is just pinned in place on the overlap.  The glue used must be a proper waterproof wood glue which is stronger than the wood itself because a broads dayboat attempted to remove a bulwark on Markie but just managed to separate 20cm of the oval section from the flat board with a sliver of the flat board remaining glued to the oval section.  Why is a repair/renewal necessary?

The Rig / Re: Gunter Rig

Hi Paul, WB61 and WB112 look to me to be standard main (+topsail).  WB112 looks like it has the metal spars.  I am not aware of a third rig arrangement, I have only ever seen the standard main + topsail and the high peaked gaff.

Hi Paul & Tim, bear in mind that the topsail arrangement on Partan is not the standard original set-up.  With the standard original arrangement you haul the topsail yard, with topsail attached to it, up to the top of the mast, whereas Partan has the topsail attached to the gaff and the topsail yard is  fixed to the top of the mast (if that makes sense).  Markie and Partan spent a lot of time sailing together and although I am of course biased, I am convinced the original set up sails better, looks better but is more difficult to set.

Hi John,
To add my bit to what Martin and David have said, both of these WBs have plywood bilge plates with cast iron shoes.  The plywood can deteriorate/split/warp/rot and the cast iron can rust, both leading to plates getting jammed.  Thoroughly check their condition.  The earlier WBs had grp plates that do not deteriorate.  Baggy sails, we still have the original (now very baggy) sails which still get us around fine, especially down wind. I am a topsail fan, more ropes to have fun playing around with and the topsail makes a WB look so much better, personal opinion.  Although we now have a 4hp 2 stroke Mercury, we have used a 2hp on a couple of occasions, fine if you are not wanting to get somewhere quickly or punching in to waves/wind/current.  Apart from possible impact damage, the only possibly serious grp damage might be , as Martin says, at the foot of the mast, caused by having the rigging too tight and trying to pull the mast through the cabin roof.  Small gelcoat cracks are generally not a problem.  As these are both later WBs, there will not be the problem of delaminating/detatched bilgeplate housings, a big plus point.
I was visiting Roger Parish last week, former owner of Partan.  How he regrets selling her and he was looking at these two and feeling very tempted!!

Hi Pete,

This is the strangest post I have seen on the forum and the most interesting.  What have you got?  Some photos showing the outside and inside of the hull would be most useful.  I am assuming you have a converted dayboat hull as opposed to a cruiser hull.  I can only speak about cruisers and there are no structural stringers or ribs on the cruiser, apart from the ribs which appear to be a thin layer of GRP laid up over rolled newspaper and to which the internal pine cabin linings are fixed.

Please post some photos, how to do that can be found in the Forum Information in Admin Matters.

Well done David for taking the plunge and investing in the Torqueedo.  I eagerly await reports on range/running time etc. under Lake District operating conditions.  And just how noisy is it in comparison with a petrol OB?

Hi Graham & Melanie,

Meeting up would be great, it has been quite a few years since we sailed in company with another WB.
For starters we will be arriving at Swallowtail early afternoon on Monday 7th  May and depending on how quickly we rig and launch, we will either nip round to Hunters for the night, or possibly make our way towards Ludham Bridge.  We will be meeting up at some point with Roger & Cynthia Parish, former owners of 'Partan', they could be on their Freeman 22 motor cruiser.

Will make contact nearer the time.

Cheers

Miscellaneous / Trailer Suspension for sale
April 20, 2018, 05:23:40 PM
Hi,

After replacing my trailer suspension units last year as a precaution for our trip to Ireland, I want to give away the old suspension units (Avonride 1300kg) three wheels and 4 tyres, 2 x Avonride Supervan 6 ply rating 175R13, minimal tread wear,2004 vintage but no signs of deterioration and 2 x Hankook RA08 8 ply rating again 175R13, one on a rim, one unfitted, both unused and 2007 vintage.
The suspension units were working fine although the inside of the drums were corroded but cleaned up ok with emery cloth, not sure of their condition now.  Brake shoes recently replaced and bearings were fine, no overheating.  One good brake cable included.
Free to new home as long as they are used to transport a Winkle Brig.  You will need new mudguards if you are replacing 860kg units with 12 inch wheels.
New owner to collect or can possibly deliver if close to A1/A17/A47 Northumberland to Norfolk Broads.

Hi everyone,

Markie will be visiting the Broads in 2 weeks time launching on Monday 7th May at Swallowtail boatyard, Womack Water, Ludham and probably making our way up the Ant before returning to Hickling and Horsey later in the week.

Where abouts on the Bure are you Graham & Melanie?
